Powerful Words
Try as I might to deny it, I am beginning to come to terms with the fact that I am one of those people. Those people are people who thrive on affirmative words from others. I want to “not care” what others think. I want to be fully intrinsically motivated. But the full truth is that two simple, yet heartfelt words can power me through a mountain of difficult tasks over days or even months of work. The two simple, powerful, magical words: THANK YOU.
It seems, from my point of view, that the art of expressing a sincere, genuine thank you is nearing extinction. Some folks say it without even thinking. Without eye contact. Wherever it seems to fill an awkward silence. Without meaning. Without emotion. Autopilot. Others don’t even seem to know the words exist. You could single-handedly fight off an angry mob for them and they wouldn’t even acknowledge your effort.
As a teacher for almost 20 years, the number of students who show mastery in the art of expressing true thanks is dwindling down quickly. Try as I might to keep the art alive, it seems to be a losing battle, but I’m not giving up. I’m going to focus on the only one I can control. I’m pledging to make my thank yous loud, clear, direct, and meaningful so that others I care about feel how good it feels to be sincerely appreciated.
Thank you for taking the time to read my blog. It is kind of simple, I know, but it’s from my heart and I appreciate you letting me share. 💜
